A Pair of Cuba-Destined Aid Vessels Declared Lost after Setting Sail from the Coast of Mexico.

A comprehensive search and rescue effort is presently ongoing in the Caribbean region for a duo of lost boats transporting relief goods journeying from Mexico to Havana.

Naval Rescue Missions Launched

Authorities in Mexico has deployed naval assets and search planes to find the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were carrying a minimum of nine personnel, as stated by a navy statement.

The ships had been scheduled to reach Cuba's capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and no confirmation of their arrival, the statement clarified.

The Situation of Relief to Cuba

Cuba has depended significantly on aid convoys from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the country grapples with widespread power outages across the country.

"The captains and crews are seasoned mariners, and each boat are fitted with appropriate safety equipment and emergency beacons," a spokesperson associated with the mission stated.

The nine-person crew are nationals of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexican authorities said it has been in touch with rescue coordination centers from the involved countries along with their embassy officials.

"Our team is collaborating completely with the authorities and remain confident in the capability of the sailors to safely arrive in Havana," the official further stated.

Previous Aid Mission

Just days before, the Cuban government widely celebrated and officially received a different ship that had carried 14 tons of humanitarian aid to the country.

That vessel, called "a new Granma" after the yacht in which Castro came back to Cuba to begin the armed struggle in the 1950s, brought photovoltaic panels, pharmaceuticals, formula milk, cycles and food.

Larger Political Context

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have been at the forefront of efforts to ship critical assistance to Cuba beginning in January, coinciding with the time a energy blockade on the country was initiated.

International organizations have since warned of "dire" supply shortages, with over 50,000 surgeries postponed in Cuba due to power shortages.

Diplomatic tensions have been ramped up lately, with remarks from different leaders underscoring the complicated situation regarding relations.

Reacting to recent comments, a high-ranking government figure insisted that "the socialist system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

The maritime authorities said it was dedicated to using the full extent of its capabilities at its disposal to discover the vessels and secure the safety of the crews.
