One of the co-founders of the well-known frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has announced how parent company Unilever stopped the introduction of an innovative Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.

The entrepreneur, that established the business alongside his partner, disclosed how he will independently develop this new product as part of an individual collection showcasing issues Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking out about.

Longstanding Conflict Involving Creators versus Corporate Owner

The recent announcement escalates the ongoing disagreement among the world-famous dessert company and Unilever, the British packaged goods corporation that has owned Ben & Jerry's since 2000.

Both founders have claimed how Unilever and its ice cream arm the Magnum brand improperly prevented their company from "maintaining its activist principles".

The Fruit Sorbet becoming an Emblem for Solidarity

Mr. Cohen announced through an Instagram video that he's developing an innovative watermelon-based frozen dessert, requesting public suggestions for the product's name plus potential ingredients.

“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen stated from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored ice cream that advocates for permanent peace for Palestinians while demanding addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”

This particular fruit has become a symbol for solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its colors, which mirror the colors in the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Previous Social Engagement and Current Developments

In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of its products in areas occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever transferring their Israel business over to a local licensee, thereby permitting continued sales in the occupied West Bank.

The new dessert series is being developed under Ben's Best, the socially conscious ice cream brand that was first created several years back to support former political contender Senator Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Back".

Management Changes and Future Intentions

Mr. Cohen indicated how he will develop additional frozen dessert varieties focusing on concerns that Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly due to corporate restrictions.

The announcement follows co-founder Mr. Greenfield stepped down his position at the company in September, following decades with the organization, citing worries regarding how its independence was compromised following Unilever's decision to restrict their advocacy work.

Previously, Ben Cohen commented that “My partner has strong compassion and this conflict with our parent company was breaking it."

“My conscience leads me to keep working inside the company to advocate for corporate autonomy so that it can actualise the social mission, the values which established its foundation and has maintained for decades," he told journalists.
