The British designer Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer who crafted a series of unforgettable images worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.

His reputation was built on his defined forms and performative fashion, most notably the soft-colored suits that featured in rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."

Price's death comes just weeks after he debuted his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.

An Enduring Influence

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger sported during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to blend menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in crafting form-fitting garments established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as a number of outfits for her tour of the United States following her marriage.

After a career spanning more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Performative Style: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The fashion world says farewell to a authentic original whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
