I Was So Ill Walking Was Impossible Until a Fellow Passenger Essentially Lifted Me to a Bathroom.

Back when I was nineteenth year, my daily commute was on an express bus. It remained crowded and would always be without any seats when I stepped aboard.

On one specific day, I was feeling terribly ill while the vehicle rocked around the bends. I kept telling myself to endure another few kilometres before the bus arrived at where I needed to get off, at which point I could sprint quickly for the nearest public restroom to throw up.

The bus was approaching the road leading to the stop when it dawned on me I wasn’t going to hold on. Suddenly, it was like a veil came over me. My vision turned white and really quiet; like someone had cut the sound. I said to myself, “I am about to pass out”.

Thankfully, I was positioned toward the front inside the vehicle, so I managed a few steps forward and asked the driver to open the doors, telling him I needed to be sick. He promptly opened the bus doors and I weakly exited out onto the street.

I was determined to avoid being sick before a busy multi-lane road, so I gathered myself and started trying to stumble across to the park across the road, where I believed it would allow me to secretly conceal myself among some shrubs to throw up. However I must have fainted. I sensed my limbs, but I couldn’t walk or see properly, so I began crawling towards the park.

“You right, love?”

Right then, I was lifted up. I sensed someone holding me and a man’s voice asked, “You right, love?” I explained to this unknown man that I required to get to a bathroom. Thus, he practically carried me into a nearby building and placed me in the ladies’ toilets. He asked me if I wanted him to stay with me but I declined.

Not long after, I regained my composure to the point of sitting down and from the other side of the stall I heard him ask, “Do you need anything, love? Can I get you something?” I wasn’t able to rise just then but did manage to thank him and shortly thereafter was able to move my legs. I got myself home passing the next few days getting over which was a severe stomach virus.

I never glimpsed the stranger’s face – just his lower half and a large container for tools he was carrying – but he saved me, during a time when I was at my most vulnerable.

Many times, life can make you guarded, hostile, and combative. What he did was the kind of action that undoes that emotional callousness. He was proof that people’s natural inclination is towards kindness, something I love about my fellow humans.
