Jailhouse Shock: Brazil's Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Confronts Life Behind Bars

He fought justice and justice triumphed.

Two months after getting a quarter-century plus sentence for seeking to “eradicate” Brazil’s democracy, former president Jair Bolsonaro finally appears destined for incarceration.

Imminent Jailing

The adjudicated instigator – who had been subject to residential detention in his mansion while a series of legal procedures and appeals proceed – is largely predicted to be jailed in the coming days, amid growing rumors that he will be transferred to a infamous top-security facility.

Historical Statements on Inmates

Over Bolsonaro’s long political career, the right-wing ex- paratrooper showed minimal sympathy for Brazil’s jailed individuals.

“Why should we give these scoundrels a good life?” he previously wondered. “They should just get screwed, full-fucking-stop. That’s what I reckon.”

In another instance, Bolsonaro declared: “If you don’t want to finish there, all you have to do is to avoid sexual assault, kidnap or rob.”

Incarceration Location Debate

But the possibility of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda prison top-security prison in Brasília has shocked allies, several of whom this week visited the facility in an apparent effort to discourage the judiciary from transferring him there.

The senator, a politician from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was part of that quartet, claimed he predicted the elderly figure to be incarcerated in the following week and a half and was concerned his assigned prison could be Papuda.

He asserted Bolsonaro’s serious gut ailments – the result of a near-fatal assault during the 2018 political campaign – signified it would be hazardous to keep the one-time head of state there. “His [health] situation is extremely serious. He cannot to handle it if they send him to Papuda … It could be dreadful,” said the senator, who also worried about packed cells and the standard of prison meals.

During his tour Papuda, Lucas noted observing cells holding four dozen prisoners: “It's virtually one square meter per detainee.

“We talked to the prisoners and they complain, naturally, of the awful cuisine,” continued the senator.

Supporters Speak Out

He is not the sole person speaking out ahead of the ex-leader's expected imprisonment.

Penning in a prominent daily, another ally, the former communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “severe” end to Bolsonaro’s “flawless” political career and asserted Brazil was about to witness “the largest wrong in its record”.

“This is an injustice that gnaws the spirits of millions Brazilian citizens,” Wajngarten wrote.

Varied Public Response

That may be true given the significant following Bolsonaro maintains on the Brazilian right. Yet his anticipated jailing has also warmed the spirits of numerous others who think he deserves to be jailed for conspiring to prevent his successor from taking power – and even plotting to have him killed.

Reimont Otoni, a politician for the sitting administration's allied group, said: “Nobody wants Bolsonaro to be placed in a dark cell. No one desires Bolsonaro to be put in segregation. No one wants Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We desire him to get respectful handling – but dignified handling behind bars. He must not persist being his self-appointed guard for his entire life.”

The congressman noted how Bolsonaro allies, who have for a long time praising the tough conditions of convicts, had suddenly realized to their entitlements. “Just now has the conservative fringe – which has always argued that basic rights should not be for lawbreakers – opted to tour a jail to find out what circumstances are really like,” he stated.

“He is a lawbreaker,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he merited “degrading, insulting handling”.

Possible Jail Facilities

In spite of rumors that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which presently holds about 14,000 detainees, his more likely destination appears to be a nearby penitentiary for police officers and other “unique” inmates referred to as Papudinha (Little Papuda).

The accommodations are much more comfortable than those in the larger jail, although nonetheless a world away from the comfort Bolsonaro had while occupying the spectacular official residence, approximately 12 miles away.

As per reports, the cell Bolsonaro could expect to occupy in Papudinha is about 24 sq metres – roughly the area of a couple of car spots – and contains a 12 sq metre WC with a bathing area and a 12 sq metre veranda. “He could be allowed to have a television and also a minibar in his quarters as long as they were provided by his loved ones,” information indicated.

Political Comments

He denounced the talked-about idea to send the former leader to Papuda as “an act of retaliation” on the part of the supreme court judge who led Bolsonaro’s legal case and will rule on his fate in the {
