Japan's Economy Contracts while Overseas Sales Suffer by American Trade Duties

Japan's economy has recorded a drop for the initial time in a year and a half, primarily caused by declining overseas shipments because of newly imposed US trade duties.

G7 Growth Standings

Japan stands as the initial Group of Seven country to announce an output shrinkage in the most recent three-month period.

With the United States yet to release its gross domestic product data for Q3 2025, the current Group of Seven growth leaderboard indicate:

  • The French economy: 0.5 percent expansion
  • United Kingdom: +0.1%
  • Canada: 0.1 percent (preliminary figure)
  • Germany: 0%
  • Italian economy: no growth
  • Japan: -0.4%

Tourism Shares Slump amid Diplomatic Dispute with China

In addition to the GDP decline, Japan is dealing with an escalating political conflict with China regarding Taiwan.

Shares in Japan's travel and retail companies have fallen noticeably after China recommended its residents to avoid visiting to Japan.

This action by Chinese authorities heightened a diplomatic feud that was triggered by statements from Japan's recently appointed prime minister about the possibility of deploying troops in the event of a potential Chinese attack on Taiwan.

The development led to a wave of sell-offs across Japan's leisure shares.

  • Oriental Land stock dropped by 5.7 percent
  • The department store chain tumbled by 11.3 percent
  • Japan Airlines declined by 3.75 percent

"The ongoing dispute over Taiwan and Beijing's travel warning discouraging visits to Japan brings near-term difficulties for retail and hospitality sectors.

"Chinese visitors represent roughly 25 percent of Japan's inbound traffic, making retail outlets, high-end shopping, and tourism services particularly vulnerable."

Economic Contraction Breakdown

Japan's GDP dropped by 0.4 percent in the July-September quarter, as manufacturers' exports were affected by tariffs levied by the United States recently.

Exports were a key driver of the contraction, falling by 1.2 percent compared with the previous quarter, and were 4.5 percent lower than a year ago.

Previously, the US administration had threatened Japan with a additional 25% tariff on its products, which was later lowered to 15% when the two nations reached a trade deal.

Consumer spending also fell, by 0.3 percent quarter-on-quarter.

On an annual basis, Japan's GDP contracted by 1.8 percent in the quarter through September.

"The Japanese economic situation was stable in the initial six months of this year and the latest GDP figures showed that growth is paused for now.

I expect Japan's economy to be back on a gradual growth trend going forward."

The US administration has recently acknowledged the effect of tariffs on US consumers, lowering duties on food imports including beef, produce, beverages and bananas amid increasing concerns about rising costs.
