The Eurovision Song Contest Was Traditionally a Campy Joy – However It Has Become a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.

A new term emerged a few months following the onset of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it stands for “Injured child with no living relatives”. This designation is specific to Gaza, as stated by medical experts like child health specialists. Typically, it is unusual for doctors to care for a minor who has lost their whole family. However, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary concerning the genocide in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been obliterated and the number of young amputees is greater than that of anywhere else in the world. No sense of normalcy about scores of doctors returning from a sea of ruins with testimonies of children being deliberately targeted.

A Hell on Earth Despite a Supposed Ceasefire

The Gaza Strip continues to be a profound humanitarian disaster. Vital medicines and equipment are being blocked those in need, and major human rights organizations contend that atrocities are continuing. The Israeli government disputes these claims, consistent with how it refutes all charges it is implicated in. Meanwhile, while traumatised orphans are now enduring frigid conditions in temporary shelters, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from pursuing its declared purpose of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” The contest will continue to offer a welcoming platform for Israel, although at least four European countries have now boycotted in dissent. And this, it seems, is what international harmony looks like.

Eurovision, of course excluded Russia from taking part in 2022 due to the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza seems treated differently.

A Selective Vision

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was accused of questionable voting tactics last year in what could be seen as an effort to politicise Eurovision. Ignore the report that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Neglect the data that settler violence and coerced removal in the West Bank have escalated. Overlook the situation that international journalists are still prevented from freely reporting in Gaza. None of this, evidently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.

The Contest Continues While Ignoring Staggering Tragedy

Eurovision reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – nearly twice the average life expectancy of a person in Gaza at present. The show may go on, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the camp joy it was formerly known for. A competition that initially championed peace has now become a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
