Citizens have gathered around the country to commemorate the second anniversary since the Hamas-led attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions advanced in the neighboring country over a resolution to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The attack saw over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely most fatal day for Jews since the World War II.

Israel reacted by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, as reported by the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are considered accurate by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"The aggressive opponents have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Tuesday.

He also vowed to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will never again create a danger to Israel".

Memorial Events Across Israel

The government authorities delayed formal memorials until October 16th - after the end of the religious holiday season - but events still were held throughout the country on Tuesday.

A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas incident was conducted in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the affected families, it was aired on Israeli TV networks.

A period earlier, a silent tribute was observed around the country.

Ceasefire Talks in Egypt

At the same time, Israeli and Hamas representatives gathered in the North African tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to discuss the terms of the plan.

A high-ranking Palestinian official involved in the talks indicated that an night meeting of negotiations began at 7 PM local time.

The official stated the day's discussions ended without concrete outcomes, amid conflicting views over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not resume fighting after the initial stage of the deal.

He commented that the talks are "difficult and have yet to achieve any major advancement," but pointed out that facilitators are making efforts to narrow the gaps between the conflicting groups.

Key Matters in Discussions

  • An enduring halt to fighting
  • The swap of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Plans for relief supplies deliveries
  • Post-war governance of the area

Public Feeling

In Tel Aviv's memorial area previously, young a woman - whose brother survived the incident on the outdoor event, where hundreds were killed and dozens more were captured by Hamas militants - told: "Nowhere seems like home now and until each abducted person return no one will feel safe."

"After we see everyone home once more, we can breathe again. Then we can commence heal," she added.

Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in the capital, people congregated to show their support for the families of the hostages. Israel states forty-eight stay in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be surviving.

Demonstrator one woman stated: "It's necessary do every compromise required for the captives to return. But we really want promises that we will be protected."

Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that around seventy percent of Israelis desire the conflict to conclude in return for the liberation of the captives.

Gaza Circumstances

At the area of the music event, mourners gathered to remember the victims.

From the site, the sound of military attacks and explosions could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people indicated the heavy Israeli attacks persisted.

In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were noted in the morning of Tuesday in the west side neighborhood, Rimal and zone areas and in the eastern area of that sector, as well the settlement to the northwest.

"As the dusk comes, the fear appears with it," displaced Gaza City resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli air strike earlier, shared.

"Me and my three children are terrified of the bombings. During nighttime we are resting together, embracing, especially my smallest child who places his face on me all night."

"Continuously we monitor the news to see what happened. And I'm worried that this truce will not be completed and that the fighting will come back to us."

Health Situation

The medical facility in the urban area reported it had received the corpses of half dozen people by the midday, including several killed in an Israeli strike in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.

Another medical facility in the south region of Khan Younis reported additional fatalities had been transported. A person was killed by Israeli soldiers while seeking assistance to the southern area, health workers stated.
