The Trump phenomenon's most illuminating and defining instances – not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but potentially its most enlightening – came earlier this autumn. During the period of multiple weeks, the US president began displaying everyone his intentions for a lavish reception room two times larger than the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the eastern section to build it.
He has committed acts countless times more severe – the current estimate of fatalities resulting from his reductions to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and rising, and recently a study forecast his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities an additional 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No previous president would have attempted – genuinely, no previous leader would have conceived – independently wrecking large sections of the executive mansion to construct a Versailles-style party room, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which maintain dealings with public institutions.
We transitioned from 'the gentle will obtain the world' to 'the gentle will succumb from cholera'
As confusing as it is to witness the president seek to颠覆 the old idea about democracy and exchange it with its polar opposite, there is one large group within America who should not find it totally unfamiliar. This includes individuals like us – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.
We have witnessed throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we learned about into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. At its most basic, they transformed an image of love into a symbol of hostility who blesses exactly the harshness that he condemned in scripture; this change developed more gradually, through multiple decades instead of months, yet it remains disturbing via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for numerous individuals.
A Toxic Christianity Gains Ground
So let me first describe the Christ that I grew up with, since in theory Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and because the fastest-growing cadre within America might have little sense regarding him as they consider themselves non-believers or doubters or spiritual independents. I have no problem with any of these traditions, nor with different religions; however I believe that there are pearls of significant worth in the Christian story.
It is decidedly absolutely not the narrative of a mighty king emerging; rather, an infant arrives to parents without shelter in a garage, who need to rapidly escape to a foreign land to avoid covert authorities. The baby grows up in simple surroundings, a working carpenter; his doctrine is about love for others, particularly for the disadvantaged – not simply tender feelings, but practical compassion, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. Christ's response to aggression is to turn the additional cheek – not as a gesture of passive acceptance, but as a means to educate the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing states that when an individual takes your outer garment you ought to provide him your sweater also.
The evident and straightforward reality that the Jesus in biblical accounts calls for a form of extreme compassion concentrated on the poor is what has always made Christianity rather a provocative belief system: attractive to the populace, but because of its intrinsic extremism needing to be contained. In the fifties it was controlled by dilution – Protestantism was so widespread that it essentially baptized the status quo.
A Battle for the Highest Among Us
So I have been encouraged to see the determined opposition regarding Trump develop during the previous year. It has provided great solace to assist in constructing the movement that has protested openly in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated electorate to show up in numbers in the off-year elections. We will need to continue it, and in the same spirit, with American flags throughout each rally and requests to the best parts in US history.
We will be questioned ... how did you receive the foreigner? Did you welcome them and welcome him or not?
America is best defended, essentially, through connection to the highest within national tradition, similar to Christianity is optimally secured by relationship to that which renders it unique and magnificent, particularly the pattern of the Savior. In neither case does it suggest acting as if the most damaging about the nation and Christian faith did not happen; it means both meekness and faith, a mixture that genuine national faithful should embrace.
