We are verifying images and video posted this morning that show the aftermath of a reported car bomb blast that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he succumbed to his wounds. A probe is under way.
The initial step to verify the site of where the pictures were from was based on social media reports indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby residential complex seen in the footage.
Identifying additional buildings, streetlights and the street layout verified where the pictures were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
