What We Know Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Shooting

At least 16 individuals lost their lives and more than 40 sustained injuries when gunmen shot at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police are describing as a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have confirmed the death toll is 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to medical facilities.

The deceased are still awaiting formally identified, but investigators think their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the events before the shooting, saying they were standing when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, a senior official declared that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message read.

One Child

A child who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed in the incident, according to reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still under care, with five in serious condition. The injured comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
